Gangotri is located about 250 km from Rishikesh. It is a small and very nice town at an elevation of 3140 meters. It is very popular spot for pilgrimages and tourists, many who have come to make the trek to Gomukh or futher. But it is also a nice and peaceful place to stay. The Bhagirathi River rushes by and is extremely loud, giving the place a peaceful atmoshpere.
Gangotri Temple is dedicated to the goddess Ganga. Every evening at the bank of the river, an arati is performend accompanied with the sounds of Ganga Stotram.
King Bhagiratha is said to have sat here to worship Shiva, so Lord Shiva would take the Ganges on his head.
The Pandavas are said to have visited this place to atone for the sin of killing their relatives during the Kurukshetra war. In Bhagavad-gita, Krishna says: “Of flowing rivers I am the Ganges.”
