Gaurikund is a small village situated on the way to Kedarnath in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is about 210 km from Rishikesh and 335 km from Gangotri.
Gaurikund is said to be the place where Gauri (Parvati) took birth and did austerities for hundreds of years to attain Shiva for her husband. There is a hot water spring also named Gauri kund and a small temple dedicated to Parvati which is said to mark the place where she did austerities.
About a half km from Gaurikund there is a temple called Sirkata Ganesh, the beheaded Ganesh. It is associated with the legend of how Ganesha acquired his elephant head and it is believed that Shiva beheaded him at this place.
